How to write an industrial paint specification for a manufacturer
A practical checklist for defining exposure, substrate, preparation, coating system and acceptance criteria.
Start with the asset and exposure
Name the structure or equipment, indoor or outdoor location, contact media, temperature cycles, UV exposure, condensation and mechanical wear. A product name alone cannot define a durable coating system.
Describe the substrate and its condition
State the metal or mineral substrate, existing coating, corrosion condition, weld profile and feasible preparation method. Include the required preparation standard when the project already defines one.
Define the complete system
Ask for the primer, intermediate and finish layers as one compatible system. Record colour, gloss, target film build, inspection points and repair procedure in the approved project documents.
Use project documents as the authority
This guide helps structure a review. Product suitability, numeric parameters, compatibility, approvals and commercial terms must be confirmed for the selected material and order.
