Choosing a hydraulic oil viscosity grade
Why the equipment requirement, temperature, pump design and operating condition must guide viscosity selection.
Use the equipment manual as the boundary
Start with the hydraulic-system manufacturer’s current instruction for viscosity grade, performance level and permitted fluid type. The manual may list different grades for different ambient ranges or duty conditions.
A supplier can help interpret a requirement but should not erase it. Where documentation conflicts, identify the equipment model and obtain approval from the asset owner or responsible engineering authority.
Consider the full temperature range
Oil must flow at start-up while maintaining an adequate film at operating temperature. Ambient temperature, reservoir heating, cooling, duty cycle and generated heat all influence this balance.
A single room-temperature number cannot describe behaviour across the operating range. Review viscosity-temperature performance against the equipment requirement.
Include pump and system design
Pump type, pressure, clearances, valves and filtration can affect the permitted viscosity window and performance category. The system may also require anti-wear, oxidation, rust, foam or air-release performance.
Treat these as one selection problem. Matching viscosity while missing the required performance class does not establish suitability.
Plan diagnosis and conversion
If the system shows slow response, noise, heat, leakage, deposits or short fluid life, record conditions and oil analysis. Mechanical, contamination and operating causes should be reviewed alongside the lubricant.
Before switching, confirm miscibility, seals, drain or flushing needs, filter changes and monitoring. Document the approved product, transition, fill date and follow-up checks.
