Dry film thickness for industrial coatings
Why target thickness, measurement method, geometry and acceptance rules must be planned together.
Connect thickness to the system
Target dry film thickness is selected for a particular product, coat and system. Take it from the approved project specification and current product data, not a similar material.
Record the target for each coat and the total system. The schedule should explain stripe coats, local repairs and areas where individual layers cannot be measured separately.
Distinguish wet and dry measurements
Wet film checks help control deposition during work. Dry film measurements verify build after volatile loss and are normally used for final acceptance.
The relationship depends on volume solids and application behaviour. Use approved data and the measurement procedure rather than a generic conversion.
Plan representative measurements
Define gauge type, calibration, verification, substrate correction and the number and distribution of readings. Include difficult geometry instead of measuring only flat, accessible areas.
Agree how readings are grouped and evaluated. Averages can hide local under-thickness, while one isolated reading may not represent an entire structure.
Manage variation and retain records
Low build can reduce barrier protection; excessive build can cause solvent retention, cracking, poor cure or stress depending on the coating. Define permissible variation and an approved repair route.
Link readings to area, coat, batch, date, gauge and inspector. With preparation and ambient records, the report shows how the specified system was installed rather than offering disconnected numbers.
