Technical guide

Selecting a coating system for structural steel

How environment, preparation, maintenance access and appearance shape a steel-protection system.

Separate exposure from appearance

Corrosion protection is driven by the environment and service life; colour and gloss are finish-layer decisions. Keeping these requirements separate improves technical review.

Plan preparation before naming products

Surface cleanliness, soluble salts, edge treatment and roughness affect adhesion and lifetime. Confirm what can actually be achieved in the fabrication shop or at site.

Design for inspection and repair

Include stripe coats, dry-film measurements, curing checks and a compatible repair method. A maintainable system is often more valuable than a nominally thicker one.

Use project documents as the authority

This guide helps structure a review. Product suitability, numeric parameters, compatibility, approvals and commercial terms must be confirmed for the selected material and order.
