How to select a zinc-rich primer
What substrate preparation, zinc technology, overcoating and service conditions mean for primer selection.
Confirm mechanism and substrate
Zinc-rich primers are normally considered for prepared carbon steel where formulation and electrical contact support their intended protection. They are not a universal primer for every metal or surface condition.
Confirm steel condition, contamination removal, cleanliness and profile against the selected product data. Poor preparation can prevent the primer from establishing its designed interface.
Distinguish product technologies
Organic and inorganic zinc-rich primers differ in binder, curing, application and overcoating. Each group contains multiple formulations, so the technology name is only a starting point.
Review mixing, agitation, film build, humidity, curing and repair. Zinc pigment can settle, making application control part of achieving a consistent film.
Evaluate zinc information carefully
Zinc percentage can be reported on different bases, making isolated numbers easy to misread. Use current technical data, applicable specification and an agreed test basis for comparison.
More zinc is not a substitute for correct formulation, application or design. The primer must also be practical to apply and compatible with following coats.
Select and approve the complete system
Confirm cure and surface condition before overcoating, and define stripe work and repair for edges, welds and damage. Do not assume every repair material recreates the original mechanism.
Set exposure, durability target, barrier layers, finish, application location and maintenance method. Approve compatibility, build, inspection and repair in the project documents.
